To celebrate my extreme middle-agedness and challenge myself to write more, I decided to give up something I loved, relied on, or took for granted every month for a year, and write about the experience.

It turned out to be much more than a writing exercise.

Meat. Sweets. Caffeine. My bed. My car. Music. And many more. I slept on my roof. I got weirdly emotional about coffee. I confess about candy. I found out how much of my identity was just rhythm and habit. I've always had a harsh and uncomfortably honest voice in my head that I usually keep to myself, but for this year, I gave it space on the page. It shows up in every essay, arguing with me, heckling me, and occasionally landing a punch right when I needed it most.

This book is those twelve essays, funny and vulnerable in roughly equal measure. This edition also includes three bonus articles only available in print: Sex, Drugs, and Alcohol.

I'm not a guru and I'm not selling you a plan. I just gave some stuff up and paid attention. The outcome, in the end, was something I never saw coming.
